The Great Flood of 2011
Grand Isle County was severely hit by what has been dubbed, the Great Flood of 2011.
What could
be the second largest natural disaster, behind the Ice Storm of 1998, left residents in several island
towns stranded and forced others to evacuate.
Locals began to worry about flooding after the rain and wind storm that affected the county on
Saturday, April 30.
With non-stop rain, water from the continue to rise.
The lake hit the flood level early
last week causing many commuters to wonder whether US Route 2 would be closed as the water
edge closer.
As early as last Tuesday, residents in Isle La Motte were reportedly unable to get off the island
and non-residents were asked to not travel to the town.
