After the recent news broke regarding the atrocities of the Haiti earthquake, Google has been put to the test
to provide online support to the Haitian people.
Malicious web users have attempted to use Search Engine
Optimisation (SEO) to hijack a number of keywords related to the disaster and spread spyware.
Keywords such as “Haiti”, “earthquake” and “Port-au-Prince” have been bombarded with SEO techniques in
order to implement rogue links.
Needless to say Google has worked hard to counteract these measures with
a crack down on online viruses.
SEO and localised marketing has also worked in a positive fashion to take action in the support of the
recovery effort in Haiti.
Google has been quick to implement an array of online services including a people
finder tool to find out information about missing friends and relatives.
