Italy:
traditions at sea
Italy can be considered a major, if not “the” major, centre for
cruise activity in Europe.
The country participates in all aspects of the industry from shipbuilding, to crewing, to serving
as a destination market.
In fact, Italy led all other European
countries in the volume of cruise ship construction, cruise
em-barkations and cruise passenger destination visits throughout the four-year period from 2005 through 2008.
As a result,
Italy was the beneficiary of the largest share of cruise industry ex-penditures in Europe and consequently had the highest
eco-nomic impact, accounting for approximately 30% of the
indus-try’s economic impacts in all three years, including direct
ex-penditures, total jobs and total compensation.
