Think about how many times a day we give negative comments to our children: "Hurry
Up!" "Don t eat in the living room!" "You are wearing that dirty shirt again?" "Be Quiet!"
"Will you please stop hitting your sister!" "Calm down!" "How many times have I asked

comments more than I care to admit!
We would all do well to focus less on negative comments and more on positive ones:
"Thank you for playing so well together today!" "Thank you for sharing with your sister
– that was so sweet of you!" "I appreciate you doing the dishes as soon as I asked you
to!" "Your room looks great – you did a nice job cleaning it.
" "Wow, you really used
some bright colors on your picture – I like looking at it.
" Notice how these comments are
commending specific behaviors rather than general statements such as, "You are such a
good boy!"
Since we get more of the things we focus on, then we want to focus on the good NOT
