PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION
A prejudice is a preconceived belief, opinion or judgment especially toward a group of
people characterized by their race, social class, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age
or religion.
It also means a belief or justification independent factual evidence, and
includes any attitude that is resistant to rational influence.
Although positive and negative
prejudice both exist, when used negatively, prejudice implies fear and antipathy toward
the object of prejudice.
There are three main ways in which people have prejudice:
* What people believe to be true: Believing as fact something that has no concrete or
rational explanation.
* What people like and dislike: Attitudes toward members of particular classes such as
race, ethnicity, national origin, or creed.
* How people are inclined to behave: Expressions of what should be done if the
opportunity presents itself.
