Capitalism allows for the practically unrestricted accumulation of wealth.
But is there a
point where one can go too far and accumulate too much wealth?
When someone becomes rich through a successful business, they may be called a
magnate .
This can be a general term, such as in the sentence, “John worked hard his whole
life, and at the age of 35 became a business magnate.
” It can also be used with an adjective
of the industry that the person became prolific in.
For example, William Rockefeller was a
prominent 19th
century American oil magnate.
The term magnate usually carries a neutral or
positive undertone, whereas the term oligarch normally carries a (sometimes only slight)
negative connotation.
The term oligarch differs also from magnate because it denotes the
fact that oligarchs, due to their wealth, exert significant influence over the actions of a nation.
