Mini Ethnography of teaching writing in IEI151
Introduction
While I hovered at the door to the classroom in Teachers college, I peeked from the small
window on the door; three Asian male students were chatting and another was taking a nap
resting his head on crossed-arms on the table.
As soon as I walked in, they looked at me, but did
not stop chatting in Chinese.
Despite my hesitation to interrupt them, I asked to students, “Is this
Dr.
Goodwin’s class?” “Yes,” replied one of students with a strong foreign accent.
The
conversation did not go any further, so I grabbed the chair and sit where I could observe the
entire class because I wasn’t sure what to look for at first.
A few minutes later, as soon as the
instructor entered the classroom, she walked up toward me and greeted, and handed photocopies
of materials she was going to use in class.
During the session, there were eight Asian students out of ten; two students were absent.
