I remember the banks of the Dordogne River in Souillac
when we were teenagers.
The summers were hot and the
nights stormy.
Processions of bright, flower-bedecked floats
rambled through town, interspersed with loud and festive
majorettes and brass bands.
We were on vacation and used to
meet every afternoon, opposite the municipal campground,
at the guinguette (outdoor café), a simple structure sheltered
from the sun, where we could quench our thirst between
dips into the river from the pontoon.
The welcoming banks of the Dordogne attracted fishermen,
swimmers, and those just out for a stroll.
Terrified by the
August storms, we sought shelter, running as fast as we could
to the outdoor café!
