1948-1967: from Independence to
assertive nation-state
After the declaration of independence on 14th May
1948, Israel was attacked by its Arab neighbours.
In
spite of little preparation and an inferior military, Israel
managed to repel the invading forces.
However, this
victory, was only short lived.
The insecurity which Jews
had felt in pre-Independence Palestine remained and
many still felt an existential threat to their existence.
Further wars followed, culminating in the victory of
1967.
Israel was now the dominant military force in the
region, having defeated the Arab armies, led by
Nasser in six days.
However, victory came at a price,
laying the foundations for much of the debate
surrounding Israel and the Palestinians to this day.
