Balancing Reading and the Language Arts:
Reflections from Pamela Craig, 2009 Program Chair
Dear Members,
Reflecting back over the past year and the many changes that found their way into
the language arts classroom, it becomes clear that we are all in a constant state of
flux.
We’ve added FAIR, FCIM, and RtI to our collection of acronyms.
We are increasingly called upon to
rethink the way we teach our students, focusing not only on curriculum guides but on differentiating instruction at the same time.
At times we want to simply close the door and go back to what we know best – reading and writing.
While
the urge to return to the old routines, texts, and instructional practices is strong, the needs of our students
continue to urge us to move forward.
For some of us, this is a new journey into an unknown world.
For
others, it is a revisiting of an old destination.
