In the Pinelands, one may forget that
New Jersey is the most densely populated state and that rampant development continues to occur year after
year.
From 1995 to 2000, 47,950 acres
of forest land was converted to development in New Jersey.
The greatest
loss of forested land occurred in
Ocean, Morris, Atlantic and Somerset
counties.
Even with Pinelands protection, development of prime open space
and productive farmland and demolition of historic properties will continue
to occur without money for acquisition.
