This week Venezuela celebrates “holy week”, also
known as Easter in other nations where catholicism has a large presence.
The religious festivities coincide with Jewish celebrations of Passover this year.
Takingadvantageofthenationalholiday,officiallycelebratedonThursdayandFriday,PresidentChavezdeclaredtheentireweekasfestiveinanefforttosaveonenergy.
Duetoaseveredroughtaffectingthenation,Venezuela,dependentonhydroelectricenergyformorethan70%
of electricity, is facing great difficulties in maintaining
the electricity supply for the nation’s 27 million citizens.
Rationing, conservation and other energy saving measures have been mandated during the past five months,
during which time rainfall has been dangerously sparce.
This week’s decision to suspend work activities in
most sectors will ensure a savings of over 500 mega
watts of electricity daily.
