udbury’s reputation as
one of the greatest and
most enduring mining
camps in the world is
being validated once again.
One
hundred and twenty-six years
after the discovery of ore in the
Sudbury Basin, Xstrata Nickel
is putting the finishing touches
on its $940 million Nickel Rim
South Mine.
Discovered in 2001 and under
construction since March 2004,
Nickel Rim South is ramping
up to full production and
commissioning infrastructure in
preparation for a handover to
operations at the end of March.
Large capital spending projects
are notorious for delays and
cost overruns, but Nickel Rim
South is on time and on budget,
despite a roller coaster ride
through a commodity boom
that peaked during the height of
construction.
