Ideally situated only 35 kms away from the Atlantic coast,
near the biggest European forest, North of Spain and the
Basque country, St Paul Les Dax is just next to Dax that’s
why it has always been a passage town. The old Roman
road used to come through St-Paul. Many armies followed
that road such as the Crassus, the Visigoths, the Arabs,
but also the pilgrims going to St Jacques de Compostelle,
from Tours.
Later on, many travelers also came past St Paul: Mazarin,
Napoléon the 1st and even Wellington’s soldiers in 1814.
During the English occupation of Aquitaine, the Prince of
Wales ordered the inhabitants of St Paul to protect the
city walls. In 1790, it was just a hamlet, largely dominated
by Dax, famous for its thermal waters. Then, the simple
parish became a town called, at that time, “Red Hat”,
until 1792, and after became St Paul Les Dax. During
