Harpy Eagle Harpia harpyja: a
new record for Monagas state,
Venezuela
On 18 May 2007, during the
Neotropical Ornithological
Congress in Maturín, I visited
Caño Colorado with a small group
of other delegates including
Mathias González and Arturo
Kirkconnell.
This area of largely
secondary forest lies c.
30 km east
of Maturín.
In mid-morning our
attention was drawn to the alarmcalls of four Red Howler Monkeys
Alouatta seniculus in the canopy.
A
few metres further on, MG and I
noticed a large raptor perched
beside the river at close range
which proved to be a Harpy Eagle
Harpia harpyja.
Together we
studied the bird closely for c.
10
minutes and identified it as
probably a subadult male (Fig.
1).
It had a broad, almost complete
black breast-band, strongly barred
tail and full crest.
Those observers
with previous experience of the
species considered that it lacked
the bulk of a female.
