My socked feet pounded on the asphalt.
I was pulling Ray along at a fantastic pace,
sprinting down the sidewalk.
The GX chasing us had stopped and fired a few off-target
shots a while ago.
We were about to turn into a street that would take us to town when we
heard a blast that sounded like the earth ripping itself open.
I looked back and caught a glimpse of a figure in pink pajamas dropping down to
the paved street.
My heart clenched, but then the view was gone from sight, blocked by a
parked car.
Ray saw the look on my face and asked, “What’d you see? What happened?
Tell me!”
I shook my head no and gasped, “To town.
” He didn’t look happy, but fell silent
and kept running.
I knew what had just happened.
After all, I had just seen it happen.
My mother had been shot.
Somehow, I knew she was dead.
I saw the way she dropped to the road limply.
That wasn’t all of it.
I could sort of sense that my mom was gone.
