A somber crowd braved chilly winds
in Baton Rouge, La.
as they stood on the
levee of the Mississippi River for a
World AIDS Day memorial service.
Organized by the Louisiana Annual
Conference, the interfaith event was held
on the afternoon of Dec.
6, five days after
the nationally recognized date that focuses on this deadly pandemic.
“We’ve heard the figures, numbers
and statistics that track the spread of
HIV/AIDS and its terrible human toll,”
said Rev.
Susie Thomas, associate pastor
for First United Methodist Church in
Baton Rouge.
Rev.
Thomas spoke during
the memorial service saying, “Six thousand men, women and children will die
today – Dec.
6, 2009 – of AIDS.
But as
an African proverb reads, ‘Statistics are
numbers without tears.
