The New York Times "Vatican Formally Recognizes Independence of Croatia and Slovenia" By ALAN COWELL Published: January 14, 1992 Reversing earlier indications that it would await diplomatic cover from European governments, the Vatican formally recognized the independence of Croatia and Slovenia today, underscoring Pope John Paul II s desire to show strong support for the predominantly Roman Catholic republics.
