NET/JOURNALISM/ APR 2010 PAGE 1 The Dragon Times JULIA ZHU STAFF WRITER So, the lucky few SCIS students who have AP exams are up to their knees in reviewing. How can you remember what you learned in the first semester? Magic? Pixie dust? Surgically inserting all the information into your brain? You wish. All you can do is stay home and drown in the plethora of papers your teachers are giving you. How in the world are you going to handle any of this? You might as well give up, not study and follow these clever tips. 1. For the multiple choice, make sure to create an artistic pattern with your answers. Especially if you don’t know the answers. We all know the people at ETS love making our lives easier, so as long as you figure out the secret pattern, you’re bound to get a five. 2. C is always the correct answer. 3. Bring food to your AP exam. Try to discern letters from your snacks. We all know the Koala Bears at the Student Store ar

NET/JOURNALISM/ MAR 2010 PAGE 1 The Emerald Eye SAM KANE STAFF WRITER It should be an obvious fact that the safety of students should be a school s top priority. For the most part, this seems to be something that SCIS is committed to, and for that, our school deserves to be applauded. However, there is one glaring shortcoming in the school s commitment to student safety, and it is one that must be rectified before SCIS is able to proclaim itself to be a truly safe environment. I am referring, of course, to the school s outdoor tile walkway, which runs around the school and is located in close proximity to the soccer field. This walkway is dangerous, plain and simple. Any sort of rainfall turns it into a slick, treacherous surface, where the slightest misstep can result in a one-way trip to the ground. Its proximity to soccer field makes it all the more hazardous. During the course of a PE class or soccer game, it is inevitable that

NET/JOURNALISM/ MAR 2010 PAGE 1 The Emerald Eye SAM KANE STAFF WRITER In a sign of escalating tensions between the Chinese government and search-engine giant Google, the Chinese government has warned Google s Chinese partners that they must comply with government censorship laws, even if Google chooses to cease censoring its own databases. The warning comes as yet another entry in a series of events stemming from Google s January revelation that it had been the victim of numerous cyberattacks from Chinese sources. The Chinese government has repeatedly denied any involvement with the attacks, but Google was not convinced, and announced plans to cease censoring search results on its Chinese site, in flagrant violation of Chinese government censorship laws. Two months of negotiations between the two parties have yielded no results, making it increasingly likely that Google will ultimately have to close down its Chinese site (google. cn). T

NET/JOURNALISM/ MAR 2010 PAGE 1 The Emerald Eye JULIA ZHU STAFF WRITER The Academy Awards (otherwise known as the Oscars) not only gave us a few amazing awards, but a few actors were there to surprise us and liven up the show. A great number of movies like “Up in the Air”, “The Hurt Locker”, “Avatar”, “The Blind Side” and “Precious” have shown in theaters all around America and even internationally. All of these well-praised with a few snide remarks on the side. Regardless, these movies have provided us with great entertainment over the past few months and have finally deserved their award. A statue of a golden man. “The Hurt Locker” was a huge success during Oscar night. Nominated for eight Oscars and winning six must have made them proud. Director Kathryn Bigelow was awarded Best Director, the first woman ever to do so. Amazing? Yes. Although “The Hurt Locker” has received a few negative comments from the actual U. S. bomb squad

On February 25th SeaWorld killer whale trainer, Dawn Brancheau, age 40, was killed by a killer whale she trained named, Tillikum, around noon in Orlando, Florida. Killer whales don t usually kill people, but when faced with an unfamiliar and scary situation the whale acts on it s instinct. Tillikum in the past was responsible for two other deaths in 1991 and 1999. After that trainers were not supposed to be in the water with Tillikum. He was also isolated from the other killer whales at SeaWorld. There is always a precaution to take even with a family dog, I learned my lesson the hard way by getting bitten by my cousin s family dog on the lip. I ended up with eight stitches on my lip. Anyways I just don t understand Tillikum s reaction. The article I read on Yahoo said Brancheau was rubbing the whale s belly

To purchase ad space contact Mr. Mason at gmason@scischina. org LISA CHASE STAFF WRITER Since fashion week is this month, pictures and videos of long leggy models strutting down the catwalk are appearing everywhere. Their long thin frames proudly display the creations that the designers have worked so hard to produce. What the media fails to show us, is the stress these models’ bodies undergo to fit into that size zero garment and how the glamorization of the skinny model affects the mindset of the public. The industry pressure for models to be sickly thin is everywhere. Former “average” sized model Crystal Renn went under so much pressure to keep up with the industry ‘norm’ she developed an eating disorder, and at 5’9 (1. 75m) dropped 95 pounds(43kg). The fashion industry’s demand for skinny models cause models to take desperate meas

Most notably, however, the new budget would cancel NASA s Constellation Program, a program focused on rockets and spacecraft designed to eventually return humans to the moon. Canceling the Constellation Program would fundamentally change the nature of NASA operations. Without the Constellation Program, NASA would not manufacture its ow

LUKE SIMMONS STAFF WRITER I like to party, I ve been going out almost every weekend in the spectacular city of Shanghai, China. I also see no problem with going out, however some people disagree with me. But not take a step in your kid s shoes. First of all we have school all week and with the homework and after school activities there is no time for having fun with your friends. Of course we can have down time going to the mall, movies and etc, but that’s not the same. When I go clubbing people my age and younger from all the international schools show up, and its great. However there are pros and cons of clubbing. Alcohol is classified as a drug, and can be deadly if too much is consumed. Alcohol also makes you lose selfcontrol, motor skills, and brain cells. Yes stupid things are done under the influence, and bad things could happen, however there are good lessons learned from drinking. First you gain more confidence, and with more confidence you learn better social skills

GREG MASON Editor in Chief With the genesis of a new decade comes change to the SCIS Journalism class. Growing in size from four students in semester one to eleven students for the new term, the class has taken on the challenge to produce higher quality products for the student body. Towards that aim the class has decided to resurrect the student newspaper, Emerald Eye. The paper will be as ambitious as the young staff makes it, with ideas to cover school related news as well as local and global concerns. This semester the journalism teacher is Mr. Mason, school counselor. Mason takes over for the departed Ms. Reppart who was transfered to the Hangqiao campus over the winter break. Mr. Mason came to SCIS in 2008. From the United States, Mason attended Florida State University, graduating in 2004. After working in social services and child abuse investigations in Georgia, he moved to California where he worked in the entertainment industry. Mason made appearances on day time
