Thank you,” was the comment made to me at a Kindergarten graduation back in 2001. When those grandparents enrolled their child at the beginning of the year, I had promised that our staff would teach her to read and do math. We now begin our tenth year of making that same promise to every parent, and we are as determined as ever to keep it. Indeed, Charter Day School has made the federal standard of AYP every year. It has been in the Top 25 of all 1,800 K-8 schools in North Carolina. Our teaching staff and parents have formed an incredible bond; and together with an enthusiastic student body, we are making great strides with our students’ education. Thanks for your support! Leland: Great things are happening at Charter Day School. From 70 students in grades K2 in 2000 to 393 students in K5 for 2003, progress has been made in many areas. With the State’s Endof-Grade testing, our school was rated as a School of Distinction, High Growth. Our school met all of the ABC goals for 2002-2003, and our teachers and teacher assistants were given generous bonuses from the State of North Carolina for this achievement. “I know many expressed disappointment at being on the waiting list; but with parents being relocated or moving between now and the opening, we are usually able to accommodate many who have been wait-listed,” Mr. Cramer said. Charter Day School opened in July of 2000 with 65 students in grades K2. The next year, enrollment grew to 129 students in grades K-3. In 2002, grade 4 was added and the school grew to 256 students. Last summer we began our fourth year of operation by serving grades K-5 to over 390 students from five counties, having earned “School of Distinction” for our end-of-grade test scores. “Managing the growth with constructing new facilities, training new staff, and increasing the breadth of our curriculum has been challenging and could not have been possible without the wonderful support of our parents and the many parent volunteers. ” Mr. Cramer said. T h e C o m p o s e rP a g e 1 Whiteville – Headmaster Steve Smith announced that a 42 acre tract at the southwest corner of Peacock and Old Lumberton has been acquired to ensure expansion room for Columbus Charter School. ―Charter schools do not receive any funds for land or buildings so we are dependent upon outside help for our facilities,‖ said Smith. ―We rent our school property and buildings from Coastal Habitat Conservancy (CHC). They have been very cooperative in buying this convenient tract across from the elementary school, so we will have room for a middle school when conditions allow,‖ he added. Baker Mitchell, Managing Partner for CHC, said that site planning for the middle school Charter School Assured of Room to Grow would begin as soon as possible. ―There are no guarantees that in this rough economic climate funds can be found to build, but at least we will have a great site ready when funds do become available,‖ Mitchell said. ―The parents and community have been
