Introduction Today, pollution of air, water, and land is approaching a point of no return. Some scientists say that a major extinction of the Earth’s species— “the sixth extinction”—is already in progress. Past major extinctions were caused by some drastic environmental changes. The most recent— the fifth—was caused by collisions between Earth and an extraterrestrial bolide. The sixth extinction, however, is believed to be caused by humans. It is believed that humans, with the invention of agriculture about 10,000 years ago, did not have to interact with other species for survival, and so could manipulate other species for their own use, which eventually led to the massive violation of the ecosystem today (Eldredge 2001). John Paul II closely relates the current ecological crisis to other moral c

s people of faith, we often turn to the Bible for advice on how we should live and improve our lives. Turning to scripture, we often think of self-improvement and self-care in spiritual terms and seek ways to purify our souls, make our hearts more loving, and better conform our minds to Christ. For issues that concern our physical bodies, however, most of us are conditioned to look elsewhere for answers. And yet, despite this, the Bible does teach us how we must think about and care for our bodies. Scripture teaches us that we are all created in the image of God and that our bodies are to be temples of the Holy Spirit. We honor God when we take steps to foster an environment that promotes healthy living for creation and for each other. When we disregard the importance of a world that is clean and safe, however, our bodily temples suffer, and we fall short in honoring our Creator. The pervasiveness of pollution across the land, water, and air, and the presence of harmful chemical

TOOLS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PEACEBUILDERS Marvin S. Soroos Abstract Scholars and activists promoting peace and environmental values have tended to work independently of one another, even though their goals and agendas are interrelated. Inspired by Chadwick Alger’s metaphor of a tool chest for peacebuilders, this article proposes twenty-four tools for environmental peacebuilding. These tools are organized into four categories (or drawers): (a) international law, (b) international governmental organizations (IGOs), (c) concepts and principles, and (d) non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and global civil society. Collectively, they can contribute to peace not only by ameliorating resource scarcities and environmental stresses that may lead to violent conflict, but also by fostering cooperative relations among IGOs, national governments, and non-governmental groups, while addressing environmental related social injustices. Introduction Peace and ecological well-being are mutually reinfo

EWS Office of Justice and Peace, Diocese of Richmond May 2008 Understanding Four Basic Ecological Principles Excerpted from “The Habits of Creation” Workshop Manual, written by the diocesan Ecological Working Group The earth is an extraordinary body, so full of life and energy, of diverse parts acting together, that some have likened it to an organism. This biosphere is comprised of hundreds of different ecosystems, distinct communities of plants and animals, and the water, air, soil and mineral resources that support them. Ecosystems are like neighborhoods, or perhaps like neighborhoods of years past. All the “neighbors” interact with each other, either directly – a bee pollinating a berry flower, a fox eating a squirrel – or indirectly, as when rain leaches nutrients from deer droppings, which in turn enter a stream, fueling the growth of algae, a source of food for the fish. Ecosystems vary in size, complexity, and vulnerability to human intervention. Some, like tropical forest

God created an abundant Creation, filled with glorious creatures both large and small. As stewards of God’s Creation we are called to protect all life, to keep and care for the garden. The blessing of fruitfulness is given to all of Creation in Genesis, and it is our duty to ensure that all life is allowed the opportunity of fruitfulness. The Creator blessed the Earth so that all creatures will prosper with great abundance and diversity. Stewardship of Biodiversity and Endangered Species The protection of biodiversity, or the diversity of all life, is an essential part of our roles as stewards of Creation. The current rate of extinction is 50 to 1,000 times the natural rate of extinction in some areas. Since the early formations of the U. S. colonies, at least 500 species native to the United States are known to have become extinct. The loss of one species can have significant effects across all of creation. In Central and South America a single tree may have as many as 1,200
