Cleanliness and Godliness A Guide for Planning a Green Cleaning Fellowship Event From the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Programs Goals: To Worship together, Build support, and Witness! A green cleaning activity at your church or in your home is an opportunity for fellowship and becoming better informed. It will build support in your church and community for environmental health and justice issues. As a host, you can help facilitate these goals by setting concrete expectations for yourself and by following the steps below. STEP 1: Pick a date and time for your green cleaning fellowship - Touch base with your church and church leadership team about availability and interest. - Think about when your friends and neighbors are most available. - Decide if you want to ask a friend or neighbor to be a co-host with you. - Find a suitable location and make sure it is available for the date and time you want it. - Let NCC Eco-Justice staff know your plans so that we can support

When God created the oceans, God declared them “good. ” We receive the oceans’ bounty on our tables and experience the ocean’s beauty as we participate in recreational activities. As God’s stewards, we are called not only to enjoy the oceans, but also to care for them as a sacred gift from God. Because we are people of God, we are to maintain the bounty of the oceans’ waters and the integrity of oceanic systems that contain beauty and support an abundance of life. God’s Living Seas and Oceans The oceans’ influence are felt by every living thing on Earth, no matter the distance from the seashore. Oceans often define the cultural identify of island and coastal communities. Even for communities far from the shore, oceans are invaluable. Oceans are not only phys

Ideas for Green Team Initiatives Recycling Have a campaign to get all church members to recycle. Provide recycling bins and a list of things the local trash pick-up will accept. Have a glass collection once a month. Many cities won’t pick up glass in the recycling bins, so it requires gas and effort to drive to the recycling centers that accept glass. To make it convenient for folks and to save energy, get a couple of volunteers with a pick-up truck or van who are willing to collect the glass and take it to the recycling center the next day. Make sure the church has recycling bins at various places in the church, especially the office area and the social hall where food is served. Education/Worship Have a green film series and provide popcorn and time for discussion afterwards. Or sponsor a speaker series about practical ways to go green. Have an Earth Stewardship column in your church bulletin or newsletter, combining practical tips, inspiration and motivation. One church has

INTRODUCTION Hurricane Katrina, the first Category 5 hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, combined with Hurricane Rita, forever changed the Gulf Coast region and how the nation views itself. The major damage to the coastal regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama made Hurricane Katrina the costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States. More than 1,000 people died in the wake of the storm and several thousands are still reported missing. As the storm surge breached the levee system that protected New Orleans and flooded 80 percent of that city, illusions about poverty, race, and environmental issues were shattered. In its place, connections about how we treat God’s creation and God’s people came into sharp focus. VULNERABLE LAND AND PEOPLE: CONNECTIONS The death, destruction, and environmental degradation in New Orleans and throughout the Gulf of Mexico region brought to light the need for a renewed covenant of community. The wind and waters that

Welcome! Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, O n behalf of the authors of the ecumenical “open letter” God’s Earth Is Sacred, welcome to this opportunity to engage your congregation in reading the letter and embodying its call. We—a diverse group of eleven clergy and lay theologians—wrote this letter with you and your congregation in mind. At the invitation of the National Council of Churches’ (NCC) Eco-Justice Working Group, we came together in September 2004 at the National Cathedral (Washington D. C. ) with a passion for addressing one of the most harmful and insidious “false gospels” of our time: the notion that care for God’s sacred, yet wounded, Earth should not concern Christians. We came together aware of the overwhelming evidence that this false gospel had gained traction, whether by design or simply as a given within the context of our consumer-oriented society, not only within the lives of individual Christians and congregations throughout our country, but also within ou

MindfulLiving Planning a Gathering Clean air, water, and soil are gifts from God that keep us and the entire interdependent web of God’s precious Creation healthy and thriving. When toxic chemicals contaminate these gifts or our bodies, they contribute to poor environmental health for humankind and the rest of Creation. Over the last ten years, new science has emerged that links low-dose exposure of toxic chemicals to health conditions including cancer, obesity, infertility, and autism. Many of these toxic chemicals are found, surprisingly, in everyday products such as plastic, baby bottles, furniture, personal care products, and some children’s toys. We invite you and your faith community to host a two-hour Mindful Living Gathering to learn more about environmental health and toxics. This guide will prepare you to conduct a Mindful Living Gathering to present valuable information to your faith community and prepare them to act at home, at church, and in communities to improve the

Global climatechange is fundamentally altering God’s Creation. Bird and fish migration patterns are changing, permafrost is melting, and coastal wetlands are disappearing as a result of sea level rise. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that 20-30 percent of plant and animal species are at risk for extinction and that acidification of the oceans will fundamentally change marine life. Overall, global climate change is predicted to bring increases in flooding, severe storm events, and drought. And, the expected toll on human society is staggering. The additional number of people affected by malnutrition could rise to 600 million by 2080. An additional 1. 8 billion people could be living in a water scarce environment by 2080. And, an additional 220-400 million people could be exposed to malaria. 1 Although global climate change affects all human populations across the globe, it hits those living in poverty the hardest because they depend on the surroundi

Station 1: Exodus 20:8-11 This passage is from the Ten Commandments, which Moses delivered to the Hebrew people in the wilderness. We are to take a day of rest because God did. Resting on the sabbath is such a big deal that it was one of God’s first commandments to the Hebrews. Notice how the commandment begins: “Remember. ” God asks us to remember that God rested and to be aware that we too need rest. Use the supplies provided to create one or more reminders of this commandment. You might choose to make stickers that you could add to a calendar, a sign you could hang in your room, or a bracelet with six green beads and one red bead strung onto jute or twine. Take these creations with you when you leave this station. Station 2: Deuteronomy 5:12-15 This passage is from the version of the Ten Commandments found in Deuteronomy. Why were the Heb

B efore a meal we bow our heads. We are reminded of our ultimate dependence on God’s provision for this life, on farmers’ weathered hands and earthy knowledge, on healthy soils and blessed rainfall. We are reminded of an everyday miracle: take a seed in your hand, drop it in a shallow furrow of rich soil with adequate sunlight and water and you get a bountiful harvest of food. Full shelves in At the Lord’s Table: Everyday Thanksgiving the supermarket and meals on the table are not foregone conclusions. This abundance depends upon producers that steward and care for the land, the health of creation, and the mercy of God. By eating with this in mind, we nurture our gratitude during meals. We are reminded by author Sharon Parks of our “utter dependence upon the generosity of the earth and its peoples and the power and grace by which our lives are sustained. ”1 Growing Food As any gardener knows, nutrients, sunlight, space, and water are the main ingredients for creating great food.
