Abstract An attempt has been made to explore the suitability of crude Jatropha curcas seed oil (biofuel) as a fuel in substituting fully one of the important petroleum products like Kerosene. Expeller is used for the extraction of oil which is further filtered. This crude oil has a very high viscosity and, as result, cannot flow through capillary action in a standard lamp and, hence, requires viscosity reduction by a trans esterification process to convert it into biodiesel or by any other processes. But this is a complex chemical reaction and the cost of production becomes almost doubled unless glycerine is not recovered as a by-product. Hence, the paper describes the development of a unique lamp (lantern) fuelled by 100% biofuel (crude jatropha oil) for its illumination and its comparative performance with respect to a standard kerosene lamp. Keywords: Jatropha curcas, biofuel, illumination Introduction A Jatropha curcus plant is drought resistant, growing well in poor soil and

This study is based on a review of planning and policy documents, a household questionnaire survey and interviews with energy institutions, planners and rural development organisations. ABSTRACT Current trends in energy consumption and biofuel manufacturing are neither secure nor sustainable, because they are not provided by necessary cost effective technologies. Further reductions of cost and technological development will be needed for biofuels to be able to compete effectively without subsidy. With the debate raging about raw material of biofuel, microalgae may offer a solution to this conundrum; creating enormous reserves

59 5 APPLICATIONS OF JATROPHA PRODUCTS Authors: Peter Beerens, Niels Ansø, Titus Galema, Thijs Adriaans, Janske van Eijck 5. 1 Introduction Jatropha has many potential applications. However, until now only a few have been realised on a reasonable and large scale. Jatropha is primarily cultivated for its oil. However, this oil is not the only usable product from the plant. During the process of extracting the oil, many useful by‐products are created, as well. Here, first the oil applications are discussed, followed by the applications for the by‐products. 5. 2 Applications of oil Jathropa oil can be used in several ways. The pure (untreated) oil can be used as fuel or for soap production. Jathropa oil can also serve as a resource for the production of biodiesel. First the applications of the raw oil are discussed, followed by the oil refining to biodiesel. 5. 2. 1 Lamps and cooking stoves Author: Peter Beerens For lamps and stoves, the

Valorisation of Indonesian renewable resources and particularly Jatropha curcas using the BIO‐REFINERY concept Netherlands Programme Coordinator: Prof. Dr Ir HJ Heeres (RijksUniversiteit Groningen ‐ RUG, Stratingh Institute) Indonesian Programme Coordinator: Dr Ir R Manurung (Bandung Institute of Technology ‐ ITB / Centre for Biotechnology) Main Summary This priority program proposal covers the valorisation of Indonesian renewable resources, in particular the tree Jatropha curcas, by application of the bio‐refinery concept. The tree can be cultivated in harsh climatic tropical regions and is historically known for its toxic nature, but at the same time, as an attractive source for pharmaceuticals. More recently, the tree has been recognised as a source for medium viscosity pure plant oil (PPO), which successfully has been tested as fuel in stationary diesel engines. Because of its toxic nature and excellent growth characteristics in the Indon

Annually air transport moves over 2. 2 billion passengers worldwide and aviation industry generates 32 million jobs globally. So, aviation industry has its own impact on various strata of life. It contributes to almost 2% of manmade CO2 emissions and this is expected to increase for 5% by 2050. Fuel is one o

Breeding Jatropha as a sustainable energy crops for Hispaniola The goal of this proposed research is the development of an efficient sustainable energy-crop agrosystem to provide an alternative source of energy in developing countries and Hispaniola in particular. This system would rely on Jatropha curcas (hereafter ‘Jatropha’) nuts, which are rich in oil that has proven to be highly suitable for the production of bio-diesel (methyl or ethyl-esters); additionally, the straight vegetable oil can be burned directly in slightly modified diesel engines. Recent changes in the global energy market mean that the oil-rich nut of Jatropha could create significant wealth for farming communities and for the economy of the world’s poorest countries. Such Jatropha system will rely on feedstock availability and therefore farmers being provided with productive varieties that allow them to have significant income from growing Jatropha. Current information on Jatropha is anecdotal at best; it is no
