HighnotesIssue 17 • September 2011 Like many people my first experience of music making came when my enthusiastic father insisted that I learn the piano and violin. Of course I started out as a reluctant pupil but now I am so grateful to him for introducing me to the world of music. As a broadcaster with a passion for classical music, I was delighted to be invited to join Classic FM last year. I count myself very lucky to be able to bring my favourite music to such a large and appreciative audience. I love to receive messages from listeners who have been touched by the music; there isn t anything as powerful as music for stirring emotions. That s probably why so many of us enjoy making music, whether alone or as part of a group. I am a proud supporter of the work Classic FM does in the community through its charity, The Classic FM Foundation. Recently, I was invited to see the work that the charity has funded through Nordoff Robbins music therapy centre in north London. Here,

HighnotesIssue 14 • September 2010 Making Music is a Big Society. Our member groups contribute to the community in a variety of ways. We are not just about entertainment and culture, we are sociable and we engender wellbeing. We have become more diverse, taking advantage of new ways of social networking and revelling in the extraordinarily increasing interest in singing. Our new five year plan – Making Music for Everyone – which you will find abridged in the centre of this issue, reflects the confidence we have in our role and our resources even in these uncertain financial times. Our three main objectives are to continue to help members flourish, further to increase and diversify our membership and the use of our services, and to undertake wider advocacy of what we and our members do, especially at a local level. These objectives arise from the response from 750 members to our survey and close consultation with regional committees, our funders and other key bodies with whom we p

It is hard to escape the doom and despondency being generated by large sections of the media about the economy. The arts press is no different, with gloomy forecasts ranging from a huge decline in sponsorship, to the demise of many arts organisations due to shrinking audiences. So what of amateur music-making? At Making Music we field, on average, some 300 enquiries per week. At the time of writing not one single enquiry has been as a result, directly or indirectly, of the economic downturn. Our members are getting on with the business of putting on events, providing musical opportunities for young people and adults, and rehearsing their members. And attracting new members too – see page 4. A moment’s thought will discover why. Unlike the professional sector, amateur groups rarely rely extensively on external funding – primarily because they have a regular and guaranteed source of income (membership subscriptions) and much lower costs. Although many
