COM TEXAS LINKS / 37 PLEASE TELL OUR ADVERTISERS YOU HEARD ABOUT THEM IN TEXAS LINKS SEPTEMBER 2009 BY ALEX BLAIR Texas Links Staff ACO—All week, Huntsville’s Stacy Dennis waited for the other shoe to drop. She opened with 66 in the qualifying round at the WTGA State Amateur, but how could a working woman, who had only played two rounds of golf in the last month, hope to keep that up against the best players in Texas to win the State Amateur championship? Who knows, but that’s what happened. Dennis won the final match 5 and 3 after Texas Tech golfer Rosalyn Kim conceded the 15th hole at Waco’s Ridgewood Country Club. Afterward, she spent much of the next hour laughing incredulously with a “Can you believe this?” look on her face. Dennis also won the 2004 State Amateur, but a lot has things changed since then. That year was Dennis’ first attempt at the State Am. She didn’t have an understanding

This is the third part in our continuing series to introduce you to some of Houston’s top caddies. hat started as a joke became one of the more rewarding experiences in Tim Gould’s life. Gould, 29, worked as the pastor of a church in Kentucky when, two years ago, his wife landed a promising job as a nurse coordinator for a new pediatric heart surgery program at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Beth Gould moved to Houston while her husband stayed behind in Kentucky to help his successor at the church make a smooth transition. When Gould left the Bluegrass State a month later, he knew he wouldn’t have a church in Houston at which to work right away, so Beth started looking for jobs for him as soon as she arrived. One day she saw a newspaper ad that showed Redstone Golf Club was looking for caddies. She knew her husband enjoyed the game—he’s a high-handicapper without much experience—and the thought of him plodding around a golf course carrying heavy bags made her chuckle. So she tore ou

Scores of people already were lined up outside Dallas Market Hall, waiting for the North Texas Golf Expo to open its doors…which would happen an hour and a half later. By 3 o’clock an estimated 300 people were outside. Hold up, isn’t there a recession going on? Isn’t the golf economy supposed to be in the tank? You wouldn’t know it from attendance and ticket sales at the Expo, which was held Feb. 27-March 2. The Expo featured booths from local courses, resorts and businesses. Many offered giveaways or games. Hank Haney Golf Schools gave free lessons. There were 60- and 90-foot putting contests and free prizes. Long drivers, pros and Hall of Famers gave seminars on how golfers can improve their games. Retailers offered special show prices on equipment. All this happened regardless of the spi

By now, LPGA fans are well aware that her mother, Nan Stanford, was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. When her family received the news, everything stopped cold for Angela. The nineyear tour veteran with four career victories pulled out of the LPGA event that week and issued a statement that she was taking time off to be with her family. “I’m just taking it one week at a time,” she told Texas Links at the time. It didn’t last long. At her mother’s behest, Stanford, who in the past two years has become one of the best players on the LPGA Tour, got back inside the ropes for the U. S. Open in July, but her golf priorities suddenly changed. She wasn’t—and still isn’t—playing just to attain her goals of winning majors and one day making it into th

The year was 2003, when the first annual KidSwing Golf Tournament had almost concluded. Founded by then-11-year-old Ben Sater to raise money for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, the event—a tournament for kids run by kids—had gone off seamlessly and all that remained was the post-tournament award ceremony. The tension was palpable. Everyone moved closer to the stage or to the edge of their seats. They wanted to know how much money was raised. That’s what this was all about, and the crowd couldn’t wait much longer. In just another minute, the mystery would be revealed. Sater’s original goal was $10,000, but an official at the hospital warned him to temper his expectations. The representative told Sater “break even” was a good goal for the first year. Break even would have been abo

James Sacheck, a 23 year old who grew up in Indiana and graduated from TCU this spring, won the 100th playing of the Texas State Amateur Championship, which was held a chip shot from the A&M campus at Miramont Country Club. Crowd favorite and recent Aggie NCAA Championship hero Bronson Burgoon missed a 3foot putt on the 72nd hole that would have forced a playoff with Sacheck. When his short putt didn’t fall, the hopes of all the Aggies in attendance did. For about 30 minutes earlier, down by a stroke at the time, Sacheck burned the edge of the cup on a 20-foot eagle try on the same hole. He tapped in for birdie and a four-day, 4-under-par total of 279 (70-64-78-67). That score held

Guidry won that one, too, but only after Buzz Baker missed a three-foot putt on the first playoff hole. Guidry and Baker, two of the nicest guys in the Houston-area amateur scene, became close friends after the 2007 championship. “I played a practice round with Kip this week,” said Baker, who finished T19 this year. “I told him I lost a trophy that day in 2007, but I gained a friend. That has meant so much more. I did tell him if he ever gets tired of holding that trophy, I wouldn’t mi

EDITOR’S NOTE—Charity golf tournaments play a vital role for the golf industry as well as non-profit organizations seeking funds to support their endeavors. Every year across Texas, hundreds of charities hold thousands of tournaments to raise millions of dollars. Typically held on Mondays, these tournaments are not only a fundraising tool but also provide a forum for golfers and sponsors to get up close and personal with the charities they support. Some may become lifelong benefactors; others may become lifelong volunteers. For golf courses, charity tournaments are a way to help good causes while also generating revenue on days when the tee sheet may be almost empty. Going into the year, people on both sides of the equation were doing a lot of hand-wringing about the possible negative impact of the economy on these events. But as Executive Editor Mark Button reports, their worst fears have not been realized. inally, there’s a little good news regarding the economy and golf. The

Oliver Stone wrote that line for Tony Montana in Scarface, but it holds true, too, for Rory Sabbatini, who seems destined to shed his bad boy image. The five-time PGA Tour winner and Fort Worth resident said he’s never been comfortable cast in the role by the media as the tour’s villain, even though he brought much of the admonishment upon himself. Built with the frame of a 1920s prize fighter who charges down fairways with the resolute gait of a gunslinger headed to town square at noon, the South African is known not only for his supreme golf skills, but for his flashy clothes and gaudy, skull-and-crossbones belt buckles. Whether he likes the style or uses it as intimidation, it always gathers commentary, some positive…some not
