One of the 13 women who founded the LPGA in 1950, Jameson won 13 LPGA titles, including three majors, and is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Her fellow Hall of Famer Carol Mann of The Woodlands remembered Jameson’s as the best grip she had ever seen. “To see Betty Jameson’s hand on a golf club…it was worthy of being cast in iron,” Mann said. “Hogan helped her, Nelson helped her. Every time we were together, I would get a broom out of the closet and say ‘Betty, here. Show these people what your grip looks like. ’” Jameson was born in Norman, Okla. , but her family soon moved to Dallas and then San Antonio. You see his name often on the leaderboard. He’s been in the mix in the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. But until late February, it had been three years since his last victory in 2007. Mahan ended his victory drought at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where he closed with a pair of 6-under 65s that chased down fellow Oklahoma State grad Rickie Fowler for a one-stroke victory. Whew! What a relief! “It’s been frustrating,” Mahan said of the long stretch between his first and second Tour victories. “I ve had a lot of success, able to make the Ryder Cup team and The Presidents Cup team in between last time I won. It wasn’t until late October, when the competitive season came to a close with the annual Ryder Cup-style duel between the top 10 North Texas and top 10 South Texas amateurs, that Pocknall finally made his presence felt. With a mostly toothless smile and warm, friendly demeanor, he’s been a pleasant fixture at Champions Golf Club for the past four decades. “I was out here when there was nothing but woods,” he said. He’s been toting bags a lot longer than that. Starting at Pine Forest Country Club in the late 1940s, Carter has been caddying for almost 60 years. This prestigious club in the rural reaches of far north Dallas County was swarming with happy people. The mysterious Mr. X, Miller Barber, beamed as he accepted the champion’s check of $20,000. On a weekend in which North Texas’ best amateurs had to battle cold, gusty winds at Hurricane Creek CC, Dallas’ Rob Couture walked away with a five-stroke victory and his fourth consecutive TGA North Mid-Amateur title. How cold and how windy? Well, the tough conditions and demanding layout produced just one under par round the entire week. In that sense, Couture was purely the top survivor with rounds of 73-75-73.
