Water ingress into the starboard ballast tanks led to a heavy list of 24°, so that Captain Apostolos Mangouras had to flood the portside ballast tanks to stabilize the vessel. was towed back to the open sea, where she was still exposed to the stormy weather Finally, on 19th November 2002 the hull burst open and the Prestige sank 166 nm off the Spanish coast. All in all 64,000 tonnes of oil spilled out into the sea and led to the biggest environmental disaster in Spanish history. Right after the accident, Captain Apostolos Mangouras was arrested and held for almost 10 months and a bond of US$ 3,000,000 was set by the Spanish authorities.
