Title: The Artful Sky: The Celestial Path To Learning
Television weatherman Jack Borden awoke with an epiphany on a crisp morning under the broad sky of the
Appalachian Mountains. He suddenly grasped that the sky served as an artifact that provided an endless font
of both beauty and broad-based learning. This resource, available to all, inspired the For Spacious Skies
Program, a cross-disciplinary curriculum spanning the humanities, sciences, history, and, of course,
meteorology. An interdisciplinary curriculum, centered on the multi-faceted study of the sky, soon followed
and found its way into hundreds of schools across the nation. A Harvard University study of sky-based
instruction found that “sky-aware” student surpassed “non-sky aware” students in a number of disciplines,
including literature, visual art, and music appreciation skills.
