Past Simple The simple past expresses an action in the past taking place once, never, several times. It can also be used for actions taking place one after another or in the middle of another action in the past. Form of Past Simple There are no differences like in the Present Simple. All forms are the same in positive. We just add -ed to most verbs in the positive. For the negative and question we use the auxiliary did. Positive Negative Question I wanted. I did not want. Did I want? He wanted. He did not want. Did he want? They wanted. They did not want. Did they want? The only difference is with the verb to be.
