The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan for 2020
The last decade has seen the Indian automobile industry make remarkable progress. Today, India is the
6th
largest vehicle manufacturer globally and the automotive industry contributes more than 21 % to the
country’s excise duty collection. The transport sector accounts for nearly 30 % of the world-wide
consumption of energy. More than 80 % of requirements of petroleum products of India are being
imported. As this dependence on imports is likely to increase, reduction of the transport sector’s
dependence on oil is the need of the hour.
With the aim of enhancing the national energy security and reducing the adverse effects of vehicles on
the environment and the domestic manufacturing capabilities, the National Electric Mobility Mission
Plan (NEMMP) has been launched. This plan been approved by the National Council for Electric Mobility
on 29th
August, 2012,thrives on joint government-industry vision of realizing the existing potentials
