Veteran Roy Woofter Remembered
For Outstanding Community Servicemany projects to assist veterans. His
widow recalls how his evening hours
were frequently tied up in meetings
with many organizations. “But
no matter what,” she recalled, “he
always penciled in one night to be
home with me.” I didn’t know which
night it would be, but he always kept
his word.”
A native of Wyoming, Roy
moved to Las Vegas at an early
age. His father, like many other Las
Vegas men, fell in love with the
desert community while toiling on
the construction of Hoover Dam.
The monumental structure was
begun to provide vitally needed
water to downstream communities
and agricultural areas while also
providing vital jobs to many
Americans during what had become
known as the great depression.
When the dam was completed,
the senior Woofter began a second
career holding down a number
of positions at the Silver Slipper
Casino. He guided his son to value
education as a sure fire path to
