Air trumps climate at DfT
Chinese authorities slapped a
ban on Cerc’s air quality
forecasting system during the
Olympic games, it has emerged.
Prior to the games, air quality
forecasts and readings were
high, and Cerc’s forecasting
website – openly available to
the public (AQB June p2) – was
withdrawn.
The authorities
insisted that it could only be
accessed with a
password.
Speaking to AQB
after the event, Cerc’s
David Carruthers said:
“We were working in
partnership with the
Beijing Environmental
Protection Bureau and
we were asked to
password-protect the
site, we didn’t really
have any choice in the
matter.
We are however
continuing to work on the
project.
“We are more used to doing
techie work on air quality and
suddenly we were at the centre
of the international political
stage – all very exciting, but
also a bit stressful – but we’d do
it
