The GLA is preparing a series
of borough-level guides
covering public health and air
quality. The guides provide a
good example of what can be
prepared by local authorities
bringing together evidence to
inform the new public health
regime which came into being
last month.
So far eight guides have been
prepared for Camden,
Greenwich, Haringey,
Lewisham, Redbridge,
Wandsworth, Waltham Forest
and Westminster. Each guide
includes a borough-specific
analysis of how the new public
health outcomes framework
PM2.5 death tables apply to the
borough.
‘Focus areas’ are listed –
these are poor air quality areas
selected by the GLA where
there is the “most potential for
improvement”. Focus areas
have had to be defined because
air quality management areas
are blunt and inconsistent –
some councils have declared
their entire borough while
others only declared hotspots.
