Not too long ago, Jordan Spieth,
a nineteen-year-old golfer
from Dallas, won his first PGA
tournament, becoming the youngest
player to win on the Professional
Golfer’s Association Tour since 1931.
Just last year, he gave up his amateur status, leaving the
University of Texas after just one year (having led his team
to a national championship), and turned pro.
It already
seems like a decision that paid off.
I know the technical distinction between amateur
and professional, but I think we have given the word
amateur the wrong connotation.
We say “amateurish” as
a description of poor quality.
We put the term “just” in
front of amateur… “I am just an amateur,” as if it a lesser
qualification.
