Figuring out your body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, has long been
considered a quick and relatively accurate method of figuring out whether or not an
individual is underweight, has a normal weight, is overweight, or is obese,
according to an individual’s weight and height (it does not actually measure the
individual’s percentage of body fat).
The body mass index is calculated by dividing
an individual’s body mass by the square of that individual’s height, usually in the
unit of measure of kg/m2.
An underweight individual would have a BMI less than
18.
5, an individual who has a normal weight would have a BMI between 18.
5-25,
an overweight individual would have a BMI between 25-30, and an obese
individual would have a BMI of over 30.
