Enhanced biomass production and energy conversion for use in
water-scarce areas of India

Aston University: Dr.
Philip Davies (project co-ordinator) is a mechanical engineer with
over ten years of experience in developing renewable energy systems, especially for overseas
applications.
At the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid he developed novel concentratorbased photovoltaic systems.
Subsequently he researched and developed solar desalination
systems integrated with greenhouses for water-efficient crop cultivation (the Seawater
Greenhouse) resulting in pilot installations in Tenerife, the UAE and Oman.
Recent work on
these systems included modelling and optimisation of freshwater production and exploitation
of the by-products of desalination in solar-driven cooling systems [1, 2].
