Onteora Implements Common
Core Learning Standards
For much of the last century,
research has found that
teachers often work in isolation,
behind closed doors, and in the
insulated environment of their own
classrooms.
At Onteora, where only
one or two sections of a grade level
are offered at each of our three
elementary schools, teachers have
become increasingly cut off from
daily interaction with colleagues
who teach the same grade.
Teachers can counteract the
isolation inadvertently imposed
by the geographical distance from
their colleagues by participating
in “Communities of Practice.
”
In these communities, teachers
listen to and talk with one another
about student learning, study
new research focused on student
achievement, and challenge one
another to improve their teaching
effectiveness.
In a Professional Learning
Community, teachers and
administrators work collaboratively
in an effort to seek and share
learning
