Bringing Out the Best
in Student Behavior

It’s natural that
elementary school
students sometimes
fail to follow the rules.
At any given moment,
a youngster might be
racing down a hallway,
chatting during a
spelling test, or playing
a little too wildly on
the playground.
Adults’
reactions to their
misbehavior are key
to the students’ future
development.
The challenge
faced by teachers
and administrators is how to discourage inappropriate behavior in a positive
way—ideally, without punitive measures like scolding, loss of recess time, or
detention.
It is a challenge currently being tackled by the three elementary
schools in the Onteora Central School District, which are implementing an
initiative called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Coaching the schools in their efforts are Joakim Lartey, Ulster BOCES
Coordinator of Positive Youth Development, and Christine Downs, Ulster
