campaign launched
by Friends
International and UNICEF,
discouraging tourists and
travelers from visiting
orphanages in Cambodia,
and putting an end to
the harmful practice of
orphanage tourism.
Over the past few years, it
has become the norm for
travelers in Cambodia to
visit orphanages as tourist
destination.
Just as visiting
the national museums or
historical monuments in
the country is a “mustdo” activity, a visit to the
local children’s shelter has
become a popular tourist
attraction.
As a result,
orphanage tourism has
become a lucrative business
in Cambodia, attracting
thousands of tourist visits,
and allowing the cycle of
harm to continue.
