AN OVERVIEW OF ROAD SAFETY IN NIGERIA

The way in which deaths caused by road crashes are treated in Nigeria
confirms that the government has no regard for human lives.
It is
disturbing to know that human lives are treated purely as ‘statistics’ with
abysmal efforts to reduce the number of road accidents/crash fatalities.
We have noted various media briefing by the Federal Road Safety Corps
on the statistics of lives that were lost through road accidents in Nigeria
annually.
Some of such statistical breakdown that were reported states
that in 2010 out of a total of 18,308 accidents reported, 5,157 deaths
were recorded, while a total number of 13,251 persons sustained
different forms of injuries.
The report further noted that 2,119 accidents
and 301 deaths were as a result of tanker drivers/road haulage trucks
between January and March 2009.
These are depressing results.
