Established in 1980, The Gambia Governmentt/M/MRC Ethicicss CCommittee enjoys a formidable reputation as one of the best
in Africa.
It is recognised as a properly constituted Indepepenndent Ethics Committee (IEC) by the WHO and other bodies
such as the Wellcomem Trust and the Eururopopeae n Deveeloopping Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) that have
funded projects andd unu dedertaken trials in collaboboraratitionon with the MRC Unit in The Gambia.
Research projects conducted
in The Gambia mayy also be judged by thee etetethihh cs comommittees of funding bodies, sponsors or collaborating institutions, but
in all cases local approval is essential.
MRC Unit, The Gambia is now half way through the
implementation of the Business Plan that was ratified by MRC
Council in 2010.
