been a game passed
down by fathers, generation
to generation.
David Toms
learned the game from his
grandfather, Tom Toms.
Back in December,
David Toms was doing an
outing at TPC Sawgrass
when he learned that his
grandfather’s death was
imminent.
So when Toms
shot up the leader board at
The Players Championship
in mid-May, he thought it
was destiny.
Hollywood
couldn’t have scripted it
better.
“I really thought he was
in control,” Toms said of
his grandfather.
“I thought
it was going to happen
there.
”
But Toms missed a short
par putt in a playoff with
K.
J.
Choi on the famed
17th hole island green,
costing him the title.
That
left Toms questioning
himself, wondering if he
would ever win another
PGA Tour event.
After all, his last victory
had come in 2006.
He had
close calls, but he had to
