t was the amateur golfer’s dream scenario.
Dallas restaurateur John Harkey Jr. faced
a sliding six-foot putt on the 18th
hole Sunday afternoon at Pebble Beach in front
of thousands of fans and a national TV audience.
If the putt dropped, he and his Tour partner Jim
Renner would win the AT&T National Pro-Am.
harkey, a 9 handicap at Dallas National GC,
lined up the decisive putt. It was for a natural
birdie and net eagle. he tried not to think about
that. Then Renner, a 2013 Web.com graduate
making his fifth PGa Tour start, walked by and
gave harkey a final piece of advice.
“This is a big stage,” Renner said. “You better
drill it.”
harkey took a deep breath. he told himself
that if he missed this putt, he’d have nightmares
and regret it for the rest of his life. So he focused
on his line—about a cup outside the right edge—and made a
confident stroke.
