April missed a 6-foot
putt on the 72nd hole
to win the Shell
Houston Open, he
swatted his putter
head with his left
hand, closed his eyes
and let himself stew
over the error for
about 45 seconds.
Then he gathered
himself and got his
mind ready for the
sudden-death playoff
against Vaughn
Taylor.
About 20 minutes later, Kim made a
two-putt par from 30
feet on the same
hole—the treacherous
18th at the Redstone
Golf Club Tournament
Course—and won his
first PGA Tour event
since the 2008 AT&T
National.
“Two years ago,
that bag may have
been in the water,”
Kim said of his reaction after not closing
the deal in regulation.
“I might not have had
clubs to go to the
playoff.
But I just feel
calm out there.
I feel
no sense of urgency.
It’s something that’s
happened naturally
and not something
that’s been forced.
I’m comfortable with who I am out there.
I
found my identity.
