ROSPER—Many Texans probably have never heard of this quiet
bedroom community north of Dallas.
Except, of course, Jim Hays.
He lives here.
And when the first-ever TGA North Senior Amateur Championship came
to his home course at Gentle Creek Golf Club, he defended his turf against
an all-star leaderboard of players 55 and over from North Texas.
Hays was the only player in the
field to finish the 36-hole event
under par.
His tournament-low 69 in
the final round and his first-round 74
gave him a 1-under total of 143 and
a four-stroke victory over Fort
Worth’s John Grace.
Amarillo’s Tom Doughtie, the
2008 State Senior Player of the Year,
was a distant third at 150.
Using his local knowledge of the
Gentle Creek layout, Hays took control of the tournament in the opening
round on the par-72 layout designed
