ERRVILLE—Two incredible pars
were made on the finishing hole
at the State Senior Amateur.
One
saved Houston’s Jerry Hudgins, the other
doomed him.
Katy’s David Pocknall edged Hudgins
with a par on the first hole of sudden
death after both finished tied at 3 under to
win the Texas State Senior Amateur at
Kerrville’s Comanche Trace.
“When that putt fell in I just about
burst into tears,” Pocknall said.
Pocknall wasn’t the only golfer with
reason to cry, but probably the only one
with a happy reason.
Hudgins and Dallas’
Chuck Palmer began the final round in the
lead at 4-under.
Both Richard Hageman of
Garden Ridge and The Woodlands’ Herb
Fisher were right behind at 3-under.
Palmer missed the playoff by one stroke.
Hageman began leaking oil and couldn’t stop after a double on the par-4 sixth,
and Fisher collapsed completely with an
84.
