CLASS 5A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
USTIN—Jordan Spieth figured
he didn’t have anything to lose,
so he might as well win.
The Dallas Jesuit sophomore rallied
from six strokes back to win the 5A State
Championship at Jimmy Clay Golf
Course.
He shot rounds of 74-65 to win
by one over Houston’s Cory Whitsett,
Lufkin’s Webb Chase and Austin
Westlake’s Alex Ellis.
Westlake won the team championship
with a record 1-under score of 575, 11
shots ahead of San Antonio Reagan and
14 ahead of Mansfield.
It is the first time
a school finished the tournament under
par at Jimmy Clay.
Spieth burst onto the scene in 2008,
winning on the AJGA circuit and advancing to the semifinals of the U.
S.
Junior.
He is ranked No.
3 in the nation, but didn’t play like it in the first round.
