dwin “Bud” Shrake, the
legendary sportswriter,
novelist and screenwriter
who co-authored Harvey Penick’s
best-selling Little Red Book,
died May 8 after a long battle
with lung cancer.
He was 77.
Shrake grew up with another
legendary sportswriter, Dan
Jenkins, at Fort Worth’s Paschal
High.
Shrake’s career started at the
Fort Worth Press, then took him to
the Dallas Times Herald, Dallas Morning News and Sports
Illustrated.
At the Press, Shrake started his career under the tutelage of
yet another Texas legend—sports editor Blackie Sherrod.
“When Dan Jenkins brought him to me.
.
.
he immediately
showed talent and went on to remarkable success and acclaim far
beyond the pressbox,” Sherrod wrote in an e-mail to the Morning
News.
