he Fort Worth city council has paved the way elimination
of one of Texas’ oldest and most historic golf courses,
where Hall of Famers Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson,
Sandra Palmer and architect Ralph Plummer grew up.
By a supermajority vote of 7-2, the council approved a
rezoning plan to allow the owners of the Firestone & Robertson
Distilling Company to turn the 106-acre site of Glen Garden
Country Club into a whiskey distillery.
More than 25 percent of the property owners who live the
within 200 feet of the historic club in southeast Fort Worth had
registered opposition to the change, and joined over 2,000 people
who signed a petition against a zoning change. A supermajority
vote by the council was needed to override the wishes of the
residents.
