AN ANTONIO—The State Public Links Championship is
always one part survival of the fittest and one part test of golf.
When you combine the summer heat with an 18-hole qualifier
and the five required matches over three days to reach the championship
match, it pretty much makes this a younger man’s championship.
This year’s test was played at Brackenridge Park Golf Course—
the granddaddy of Texas public courses—and again produced a young
champion.
After eking past his first two matches with 1-up victories, Michael
Smith of Cedar Park defeated Justin McKay of Crosby, 3 and 2, in the
championship match.
The week started with the 18-hole qualifier, after which the low 32
players advanced to match-play competition.
New Braunfels’ Terrence
Miskell led what turned out to be an all-out assault on the par-71 layout
and earned medalist honors with a 7-under 64.
